If it’s beaches that you want, then spend your summer holidays to Algarve. Algrave is a well known tourist holiday destinations primarily because of its white-sand and beautiful beaches. Coupled with a pleasant Mediterranean climate, low crime rate, delectable food, and relatively low travel costs, Algarve is a favorite vacation spot in Portugal.

Since Algrave is dotted with a lot of beaches, it is not surprising that the region has plenty of lighthouses. Some of these lighthouses are more than a hundred years old and are still working. Visiting lighthouses should be included in your itinerary; these structures add spice to Algarve’s culture and history.

Begin your lighthouse tour with the Cabo de S. Vicente lighthouse at the west of Sagres. One of Europe’s biggest lighthouses, it has been in operation since 1846. Besides serving as an aid to navigation for ship captains, it has become a famous local attraction. The Portuguese Navy even built a small museum in it so visitors can have an insight onhow it operated and evolved in time.

If you head 2 kilometers east of Lagos, you will find another famous lighthouse at Ponta da Piedade. This lighthouse which was built in 1913 provides a panoramic view of the ocean and the natural cliffs at the island’s side. The lighthouse is also said to be a dating haven at night.

Head down south between Faro and Olhao to visit the Santa Maria Lighthouse. This 46-meter tall lighthouse, built in 1851, is located at a white-sand area close to the sea.The fishermen’s houses surrounding it give it a colorful appearance.

Finally, go east to Vila Real de Santo Antonio. The beautiful Vila Real de Santo Antonio lighthouse, built in 1916, is unique, considering that it is notlocated right by the sea. Instead, it is located farther inland, separated from the shore by a field of pine trees. Its location brightens entire sections of the beach at night.
